Lip filler or lip blush: which suits you? Shape, colour, or both

You look at your lips and something is missing. But is it volume, or is it colour? Those two need very different treatments, and choosing the wrong one is the most common lip regret we hear about.
Here is the quick way to tell which one you need.
What is the difference between lip filler and lip blush?
| Lip filler | Lip blush | |
|---|---|---|
| What it changes | Shape, volume, symmetry | Colour, lip line definition |
| How it works | Hyaluronic acid filler placed in the lips | Pigment placed in the skin of the lips with a gentle machine |
| Appointment | About 45 minutes | About 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Feels like | Pressure and a quick pinch | Light scratching over a longer time |
| Healing | Swelling day 1 to 2, settles in about 2 weeks | Flaking days 3 to 7, true colour at 4 to 6 weeks |
| Touch-up | Optional review a few weeks later, included | Touch-up at 6 to 8 weeks, booked and paid separately |
| Typically lasts | 6 to 12 months | 1 to 3 years |
| At Mirabell, from | €170 (0.5ml) | €300 |
Numbing cream is used for both, and both start with a consultation.
Lip blush suits you if...
- Your natural lip colour is pale, patchy or fading.
- Your lip line has softened and lipstick bleeds or wears off by lunch.
- Your lips are darker or cooler in tone than you would like. That is a job for lip neutralisation, a type of lip blush that usually takes 2 to 3 sessions.
- You want to wake up, swim and train looking polished.
Lip blush will not make your lips bigger. A defined edge and a little colour can make them look fuller, especially with Ombre Lips, where colour is deeper at the edge and fades inwards.
Lip filler suits you if...
- Your lips have lost some volume or definition.
- One side sits fuller than the other and it bothers you in photos.
- You want a softer, more hydrated lip without looking "done".
Filler will not change your lip colour. If your lips are pale, filler gives you bigger pale lips.
Can you have lip filler and lip blush together?
Yes, and many women do: colour from lip blush, shape from filler. The order matters.
- Lip blush first. Then wait until it has fully healed, usually 4 to 6 weeks, before filler.
- Already have filler? We usually wait at least 4 weeks before lip blush, so the filler has settled.
We plan the timing with you, so the filler goes in once your colour has healed.
Which lasts longer, and which costs more over time?
Lip blush costs more on the day, from €300 plus a touch-up from €80, but it typically lasts 1 to 3 years, with a colour refresh every 12 to 18 months. Lip filler costs less per visit, from €170 for 0.5ml, but most women top up once or twice a year. Think in cost per year, not cost per visit.
Which one hurts more?
They feel different. Lip blush feels like light scratching over a longer appointment. Filler feels like pressure for a shorter time. We use numbing cream for both, which keeps most clients comfortable.
Who should wait?
Neither treatment is right for you while you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have an active cold sore or broken skin on the lips. If you get cold sores, speak to your GP or pharmacist about antiviral treatment before lip blush. For filler, tell us about blood thinners and any known allergy to hyaluronic acid filler. We check your health history at your free consultation.
Still not sure? That is exactly what the free 10-minute consultation is for. See every style on our lip blush page, or compare with lip filler. All lip treatments and prices are in one place on our lips page.

Quick questions Short answers from this guide.
Lip filler or lip blush: which do I need?
Lip filler adds shape and volume. Lip blush adds colour and a defined lip line. If your lips are pale or uneven in colour, choose lip blush; if they have lost volume or shape, choose filler.
Does lip blush make your lips look bigger?
Not bigger, but often fuller-looking. A defined edge and soft colour, especially with Ombre Lips, can make lips look fuller without adding volume.
Can I have lip blush and lip filler at the same time?
Not on the same day. Have lip blush first and wait until it has healed, usually 4 to 6 weeks, before filler. If you already have filler, wait at least 4 weeks before lip blush.
Which lasts longer, lip blush or lip filler?
Lip blush typically lasts 1 to 3 years with a touch-up. Lip filler typically lasts 6 to 12 months.
Does lip blush hurt more than lip filler?
It feels different. Lip blush feels like light scratching over a longer time, filler feels like pressure for a shorter time. Numbing cream keeps most clients comfortable.
