Lip blush healing, day by day Every stage, explained

You walked out of your appointment in love with your new lips. Then day two arrived, with puffy lips and a colour brighter than you planned. Then the flaking. Then, around day ten, you looked in the mirror and thought: where did it all go?
Breathe. All of that is normal. Lip blush heals in stages, and knowing them makes the whole thing far less stressful. Here is what to expect, day by day, and what to do at each stage.
What is lip blush?
Lip blush is semi-permanent makeup for the lips. Fine layers of pigment are placed into the skin of the lips with a gentle machine to add soft colour and a more defined lip line, without lipstick. At Mirabell we offer Ombre Lips, Rubin Lips and lip neutralisation for darker or cool-toned lips. Results typically last 1 to 3 years, with a touch-up.
Lip blush healing at a glance
| Stage | What you see | What you feel | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Bright, strong colour, sharp edges | Swollen, tender, a little like a sunburn | Apply the balm as shown. Cold compress, wrapped in a cloth |
| Day 2 | Swelling at its peak, colour still bold | Tight, tender | Keep lips clean, balm on, sleep on your back |
| Days 3 to 4 | Colour darkens, lips look dry | Tight and dry | Keep using balm. Do not pick |
| Days 5 to 7 | Flaking and peeling, patchy look | Itchy | Let flakes fall on their own. Never peel |
| Days 8 to 14 | Colour looks faded, milky or patchy | Mostly comfortable | Be patient. Colour is still settling |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | Colour slowly returns, softer | Normal | No lipstick or scrubs until fully healed |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | Your true, healed colour | Normal | Book your touch-up for 6 to 8 weeks |
| Weeks 6 to 8 | Touch-up appointment | We perfect shape and colour |
Everyone heals a little differently. These are typical stages, not exact dates.
Days 1 to 2: why is my lip blush so bright and swollen?
Fresh pigment sits on top of slightly swollen, tender skin, so colour looks strong and edges look sharp. Swelling is usually strongest on day 1 to 2, a bit like after a dental appointment. This is the brightest your lips will ever look. Most of that intensity softens as the top layer of skin heals and flakes away.
What helps: apply the balm you were given exactly as shown, use a cold compress wrapped in a cloth, drink through a straw if it feels easier, and sleep on your back with your head a little raised.
Days 3 to 7: is it normal for lip blush to peel?
Yes. Between days 3 and 7, the treated skin dries out, tightens and starts to flake. The flakes carry some colour with them, so lips look patchy for a few days. It can itch.
The golden rule: do not pick, peel or rub. Pulling a flake off early can pull pigment out with it and leave a pale patch. Keep using balm and let every flake fall away on its own.
Week 2: why has my lip blush faded?
This is the stage that worries most women, and it is completely normal. Once the flakes are gone, a fresh layer of healing skin sits over the pigment, so colour can look faded, milky, uneven or almost gone. Some artists call it the ghosting stage.
The colour has not disappeared. It is still settling under the skin. Do not judge your result now, and do not reach for lipstick to fix it until your lips have fully healed.
Weeks 4 to 6: when do I see my real colour?
Slowly, the colour comes back up as the skin heals. Your true, healed colour shows at around 4 to 6 weeks. It is softer and more natural than day one, which is exactly the point. Some areas may hold more colour than others. That is what the touch-up is for.
Why do you need a touch-up?
Lips are a moving, moist area, and every client's skin holds pigment differently. A touch-up 6 to 8 weeks after your first session lets us perfect the shape and even out any lighter areas once your lips have healed. At Mirabell, the first touch-up is booked and paid separately, from €80. After that, a colour refresh every 12 to 18 months keeps lips looking fresh.
Lip blush aftercare: the rules that protect your colour
- Apply the balm you are given, as we show you, until healed.
- No lipstick, lip scrubs or whitening toothpaste on the lips until fully healed.
- No saunas, swimming, sunbeds or strong sun for two weeks.
- Avoid heavy sweating, hot yoga and hard workouts for 7 to 10 days.
- Skip very spicy, salty or acidic food in the first days if it stings.
- Do not pick, peel or rub flakes.
- Once healed, use an SPF lip balm every day to keep your colour longer.
Cold sores and lip blush
Lip treatments can trigger a cold sore if you carry the virus. If you have ever had one, speak to your GP or pharmacist before your appointment about antiviral treatment, and take it as advised. Never book lip blush with an active cold sore. If one appears while you heal, contact us and your pharmacist.
When should you call the clinic?
Some swelling, tenderness and flaking are normal. Contact us straight away on +353 85 186 5581, and your GP, if you notice:
- Swelling or pain that gets worse after day 3 instead of better.
- Heat, spreading redness, yellow crusts or pus.
- Blisters that look like a cold sore.
- A fever or feeling unwell.
Thinking about lip filler too?
Lip blush and filler work beautifully together: colour from lip blush, shape from filler. We do the lip blush first, wait until it has fully healed, usually 4 to 6 weeks, then add filler. If you already have filler, we usually wait at least 4 weeks before lip blush. See our lip filler page for filler options and live prices.
Lip blush at Mirabell starts from €300, planned by Maria Belina, who has 11 years of experience in semi-permanent makeup, and carried out by our trained team. See every style, healed results and live prices on our lip blush page, or book a free consultation.

Quick questions Short answers from this guide.
How long does lip blush take to heal?
Lip blush takes about 4 to 6 weeks to heal fully. Lips flake from day 3 to 7, can look faded in week 2, and show their true colour at around 4 to 6 weeks.
Why does my lip blush look faded after a week?
After flaking, a fresh layer of healing skin covers the pigment, so colour can look faded or patchy in week 2. This is normal. Colour comes back softer by weeks 4 to 6.
Can I put lipstick on after lip blush?
Wait until your lips have fully healed, usually 4 to 6 weeks, before lipstick, scrubs or whitening toothpaste. Until then, use only the balm you were given.
Is it normal for lip blush to peel?
Yes. Lips usually flake and peel between days 3 and 7. Do not pick or peel the flakes, because that can pull pigment out and leave pale patches.
When should I get my lip blush touch-up?
Book your touch-up 6 to 8 weeks after your first session, once your lips have fully healed. At Mirabell it is booked separately, from €80.
How long does lip blush swelling last?
Swelling is usually strongest on days 1 to 2 and settles within a few days. If swelling or pain gets worse after day 3, contact your clinic.
