You love them. Then you wake up the next morning, and they are bigger than you asked for, a little lumpy-looking, maybe with a bruise. Is that normal?
Almost always, yes. Here is what to expect, day by day, and the few signs that are not normal.
Lip filler healing at a glance
| When | What is normal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| First hours | Lips look fuller than planned, a little tender, numbing wearing off | Cold compress, wrapped in a cloth. No lip products |
| Days 1 to 2 | Swelling at its peak, lips can look uneven, bruising possible | Keep going with the cold compress. No alcohol, heat, gym or pressure |
| Days 3 to 7 | Swelling going down, bruises fading | Back to normal routine, gently |
| Week 2 | Swelling settled, your final shape shows | Judge your result now, not before |
| A few weeks later | Your review, if you would like one | We check how your lips have settled |
Everyone heals a little differently. These are typical stages, not exact dates.
The first 24 hours: what not to do
- No lipstick or lip products for 24 hours.
- No pressure on your lips. No kissing, no straws, and do not sleep face down the first night.
- Do not massage your lips unless we tell you to.
- Use a cold compress, wrapped in a cloth, for swelling.
Days 1 to 2: why are my lips so swollen?
Swelling is strongest on day 1 to 2. Lips can look bigger than the result you planned, and one side can look fuller than the other. That is swelling, not your final result. It is also why we say: do not judge your lips in the first week.
For 24 to 48 hours, avoid alcohol, saunas, hot yoga and hard workouts, which can all make swelling worse.
Is bruising normal after lip filler?
Yes, bruising can happen, even with careful technique. It usually fades within the first week. That is one reason to book lip filler at least two weeks before a wedding, a holiday or a big night out.
Week 2: when do I see my real result?
Your final shape shows at around two weeks, once the swelling has fully settled. This is when to look in the mirror properly. If you would like a review, we see you a few weeks after treatment to check how your lips have settled, included in your price.
Can I fly after lip filler?
We suggest waiting at least 48 hours, and ideally a week, before you fly. Swelling can be stronger in the first days, and you want to be close to the clinic in case you have a question.
What about the dentist?
Avoid dental appointments for two weeks after lip filler, and let us know if one is already booked when you plan your treatment.
When should you call the clinic?
Some swelling, tenderness and bruising are normal. These are not. Call us straight away on +353 85 186 5581 if you notice:
- Unusual or increasing pain.
- A colour change in the skin, such as a dusky or patchy look.
- Whitening of the skin on or around the lips.
Do not wait to see if it settles. Fast advice matters.
How long will my lip filler last?
Most results last 6 to 12 months, depending on your metabolism, your lifestyle and the product. Your first treatment can fade a little faster. Wondering about cost per year? Read how much is lip filler in Dublin?
